STRENGTHENING MILITARY-MEDIA COLLABORATION: A STRATEGIC IMPERATIVE FOR THE NIGERIAN NAVY.

STRENGTHENING MILITARY-MEDIA COLLABORATION: A STRATEGIC IMPERATIVE FOR THE NIGERIAN NAVY.

 BY YUNUSA ABUGI ABUJA.
The Director-General of Voice of Nigeria, Mallam Jibrin Baba Ndace has reiterated the need to deepen a harmonious relationship between the military and the media.

The DG VON stated this while delivering a lecture at the Nigerian Naval War College in Calabar, Cross Rivers State, South-South Nigeria .

Mallam Ndace who has written a trilogy on his experience as an embedded defense correspondent in the North East Nigeria, shared his experience with the participants on the Nigerian Navy NNS Kada, where he was the only civilian on board during a mission to Liberia.

He stated that "This experience highlighted the importance of collaboration between the military and the media".

He added that "In today's digital age, information dissemination has become increasingly complex. Social media and citizen journalism have transformed the narrative, making it challenging for the military to manage information".

The lecture further explored the relationship between the military and the media describing it as crucial for national development. He added that both parties need each other to achieve their desired interests.
The military must engage not only reporters but also gatekeepers (editors) to promote national interest in reporting.

The DG Voice of Nigeria cited Nigeria's role in Liberia and Sierra Leone, where the military's failure to promote their efforts allowed the British Army to take credit for their accomplishments.
This highlights the need for a media plan in every military operation to set the narrative and showcase the military's achievements.

The Director-General of Voice of Nigeria then urged the Nigerian military to recognize the media as partners and deliberately work with them to positively amplify their story, through trust building.
He emphasized that a deliberate media plan is essential to avoid fake news, misinformation and disinformation thereby ensuring that the right narratives are portrayed to the public always.

Mr. Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi is the new Director-General of the DSS.

Ambassador Mohammed has had an illustrious career in the foreign service since joining the NIA in 1995. He had served in various roles, culminating in his promotion to the rank of Director and his subsequent appointment as the head of the Nigerian mission to Libya.

The 1990 graduate of Bayero University, Kano, had served in North Korea, Pakistan, Sudan, and at the State House, Abuja.

Apapa: Untold Story of Nigeria’s Revenue PowerhouseBy Gidado Yushau Shuaib

Apapa: Untold Story of Nigeria’s Revenue Powerhouse
NEWS DIGEST – Apapa—a name that has always resonated with me, not just as the backdrop for film and TV productions or Nigeria’s once-popular Gala Sausage Roll, but more importantly as the site of one of Nigeria’s most significant port complexes. Nigeria, a nation rich in resources and potential, is home to several crucial ports, including the Lagos Port Complex, Tincan Island Port, Rivers Port, Onne Port, Delta Port, Calabar Port, and the recently established Lekki Deep Sea Port. However, many of these ports have not fully realised their potential, remaining underutilised despite their strategic importance.

Recently, I traveled to Apapa Port, expecting it to be like the other ports I had heard about. The trip, marred by a seven-hour delay in a major Nigerian airline, was a quintessential experience. Lagos is a city infamous for its traffic snarls and chaotic atmosphere. Despite my strong reluctance to stay in the mega city, the necessity of the visit outweighed my reservations.

Upon arriving in Lagos that evening, I drove straight to Apapa Port. What greeted me was beyond anything I had anticipated. The sight of over a million containers, towering like skyscrapers in an American metropolis, was overwhelming. The scale of operations was daunting, and my first thought was one of incredulity—how could such a vast logistics network be effectively managed?

Apapa, often referred to as the epicenter of Nigerian commerce, is the lifeblood of Lagos, the state with the highest internal revenue in the country. It felt like a city within a city, bustling with activities. Ships were arriving, tankers were busy ferrying fuel, and the skyline was dotted with silos from major filling stations. The energy was palpable, and for the first time, I truly understood why Lagos is characterised by its infamous traffic jams. The scale of economic activity here is both the cause and the justification.

One of the most striking aspects of my visit was the performance of the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS), especially in the light of recent sector challenges. Despite a significant decline in cargo throughput at seaports—estimated to have dropped by more than 50 percent—the NCS achieved a historic milestone, collecting a staggering N17.9 billion in revenue in a single day at Apapa Port. This remarkable achievement was revealed by Comptroller Babatunde Olomu, the Customs Area Controller (CAC) of Apapa Command, during a press conference.

Comptroller Olomu attributed this success to the intensified efforts of Customs officers, who have been working tirelessly to plug revenue loopholes amid the downturn in cargo volumes. His dedication and effective leadership were evident, showcasing the positive impact of ongoing reforms within the Customs Service under the stewardship of Comptroller General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.

I have known CG Bashir Adewale Adeniyi since childhood, particularly during his time with the Forum of Spokespersons of Security and Response Agencies when my father was the consultant for the group that ensured interagency collaboration and stopped the prevalence of conflicting reports in the past by security and response agencies. His appointment by President Bola Tinubu to lead the NCS was a decision I saw as both timely and strategic. Under his leadership, the Service has undergone a transformative period, marked by a focus on efficiency, trade facilitation, and enhanced revenue generation.

In the past, the Customs Service, like many other federal agencies, was often criticised for its inefficiencies and the misconduct of its officials. However, CG Adeniyi’s tenure has signaled the end of that era, ushering in a renewed focus on service delivery, transparency, and collaboration with stakeholders. His proactive approach to crisis management—navigating trade embargoes, fostering community engagement, and addressing operational challenges—has earned him praise from various sectors.

As a distinguished fellow of the Nigeria Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), CG Adeniyi has not only demonstrated an understanding of the critical role that public relations and stakeholder engagement play in customs management but has also set a benchmark for impactful leadership in the public sector. His efforts have repositioned the Customs Service as a vital player in Nigeria’s economic resurgence, ensuring that the revenue collected is not only substantial but justifiable.

Interestingly, upon my arrival at Apapa, I was greeted by a cluster of youths on motorcycles—an uncommon sight in Lagos, at least not in clusters. It turns out, it is a common sight in Apapa, where young people go about their daily business in this manner. Just like its parent city Lagos, Apapa does not sleep; even at midnight, containers move in and out of the port. It was a bustling sight to behold.

Apapa also houses a significant Northern community, which was completely unexpected. It is home to Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar Bambado, the Sarkin Fulani of Lagos, a prominent businessman who was crowned Sarkin Fulani of Lagos and serves as the Chairman of the Association of Fulani Chiefs in Southwest Nigeria. The Northern community is so active that some parts of Apapa felt like walking the streets of Gadon Kaya in Kano. At the end of our visit, we stopped by Ana Lura for a quick dinner and enjoyed a northern delicacy.

My visit to Apapa was an eye-opener, providing a firsthand experience of the immense scale of operations that sustain Nigeria’s economy. It reinforced the importance of effective leadership in navigating the complexities of such a vast and vital sector. Apapa is not just another port in Lagos; it is a testament to what can be achieved with the right leadership and commitment to excellence. The historic revenue collection is not just a number—it is a reflection of the potential within Nigeria’s ports and the people who manage them.

NIGERINFOBULLETIN: The Director General of the Voice of Nigeria, Mallam Jibrin Baba Ndace, has restated the commitment of the agency to deepen its partnership with Galaxy Backbone (GBB).
Ndace stated this Friday when he led the management team of VON on a courtesy call on Managing Director of Galaxy Backbone Prof. Ibrahim A. Adeyanju.

“In the hand over note, I received on assumption of office, it was stated clearly that for me to succeed as director general I require total support from Galaxy backbone. And from day one I was very keen about deepening our relationship with Galaxy backbone. It is practically impossible for VON to maximize its potential without leveraging the robust relationship that I inherited. So I am determined to expand the scope of the relationship,” he said.

He said the media has a responsibility of telling the world the giant strides being achieved by the government and its agencies so as to shape positive narratives about Nigeria.

He added: “We have the responsibility of letting the world know the positive things that are happening in Nigeria including Galaxy Backbone. You mentioned some of the facilities like robust fiber optics cable in 28 states of Nigeria, Tier III and Tier IV data centres in Abuja and Kano that you have here in Galaxy Backbone. How many Nigerians know the place of Galaxy Backbone even in the continent of Africa? We need to tell our own stories, he stated.

Going further, the DG VON reiterated that “Decades ago our founding Fathers understood the place of media in shaping positive narratives about Nigeria and they place public broadcasting on the front burner, we need to go back to that".

“Voice of Nigeria is not just a media organization but it’s an instrument of national power which Nigeria with support from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will deploy to strategically position our country so that we would be respected among comity of nations.

“We are not saying we are a perfect country but again we are not the worst country in the world. So treat me the way I am,” he said.

In his remarks Prof. Adeyanju said the two agencies can work to improve the digital literacy level of the country.

“In galaxy backbone we pride ourselves as the digital backbone of the nation. With the infrastructure that we control which we use to defend the cyber space on behalf of the government, we can always collaborate in the interest of the nation.

“We also do a lot of training, the digital literacy in Nigeria is not at a level we want it to be and because we are an ICT infrastructure company, we train staff of both government and private agencies to improve their levels of ICT,” he said.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's National Broadcast “a game-changing presidential narrative”

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's National Broadcast “a game-changing presidential narrative” that offers an opportunity for an all-inclusive Nigerian Dialogue for good governance. DG MINLS.

By Tunde Akanbi, Ilorin

The Director General of Micheal Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies (MINILS),  Mr. Issa Aremu, made this observation in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital in North Central Nigeria.

Aremu said that while periodic crises are defining features of nation-building, “what is of relevance are the lessons learned by the government and the citizens” that move the nation forward at every crisis point.

According to him, the President has made it known in his address that he “heard loud and clear, understand the pain and frustration that drive the protests”, with a firm commitment to addressing the concerns of our citizens.
Aremu therefore advised that “good statesmanship on the part of the listening President must be complemented with constructive citizenship through social dialogue for good governance.
“I have no doubt that the protesting compatriots also heard the President calling for conversation, let them seize the window and table all issues to promote good governance”.
Comrade Aremu urged the government and citizens “not to miss another opportunity to forge an alliance for repositioning Nigeria for food security, mass job creation, and poverty eradication.
The Director General noted that the list of government interventions as contained in the President’s address such as the student loan scheme, improved minimum wage, CNG transport system, and improved public revenue shows that there is already a movement towards good governance.
While condemning the loss of lives and violent attacks on public assets in some states, Aremu urged for the “deepening of the democratic process, not its subversion,” adding that “giving the antics of some misguided youths calling for the return of discredited military dictatorship, it was time for mass literacy campaign on the imperatives of democracy for good governance.
